Visiting Split with a Motor Boat

Hi sailing fans, my name is Dubravko and I would like to share with you my Motor Yacht adventure in the city of Split in Croatia.

For the last five summers my wife and I had gone sailing for our holidays, and this year we wanted to try out something new. We decided that we will rent a Motor Boat and go cruising.

We contacted Croatia´s company Sailing Europe and rented one of their Azimut Motor Boats.

For our destination, we have chosen the largest and most populated city in the Split-Dalmatia County, Split, because it is one of the oldest cities in that area and also a very popular tourist destination.

After reaching Split, we docked at the ACI marina Split, from where we continued on foot. My wife really wanted to see the Diocletian’s Palace, so our first stop was there. Diocletian’s Palace was built in 3– 4th century, and its ruins can still be seen all over town which we found very remarkable. In the middle of the palace you can see Vestibule, the cathedral of St. Duje, Diocletian's mausoleum, and numerous museums and medieval buildings. In other words, Split is a perfect city to visit if you are a fan of old history sights and preserved old buildings. Both my wife and I are, since both of us are History teachers in high school, so naturally we enjoyed sightseeing Split. We also made a stop at the Iron Gate and the Statue of Gregor Ninski, took some pictures and continued on.

Split is also well known for its Riva (waterfront), which is situated immediately in front of the palace. Split waterfront is a major public square and central place where all the sporting, church, social and all the other events take place. We didn’t stay there long simply because it was a little to crowded for our taste.

Next stop, Bačvice! Beach time! Bačvice is Splits most famous beach, and for that day it was our place of relaxation under the warm blue sun. Besides being lazy on the warm sand, we also did a little swimming and we even tried playing the local game of Picigin, but we weren’t any good at it.

And that’s it, that was the story of our Motor Boat vacation in the city of Split. On our way back, we couldn’t stop talking about Diocletian’s Palace and how Split is definitely the most amazing coastal city we had ever been in, and a place where we will one day most certainly return.
